Not all Real Madrid wonderkids make it big, but some are still shining in unexpected places!
Discover the forgotten stars of La Fabrica!
Who remembers these La Fabrica graduates?
ALVARO MEDRAN
A midfielder once tipped as a potential Xabi Alonso successor, Medran made just two La Liga appearances for Real Madrid before embarking on a journeyman career. After stints in Spain (Valencia, Getafe, Alaves, Rayo Vallecano), the USA (Chicago Fire in MLS), and Saudi Arabia (Al-Taawoun), he now plays for Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
While not the most obscure league, it’s far from the European spotlight he was once expected to dominate, and he shares a dressing room with names like Georginio Wijnaldum and Demarai Gray under Steven Gerrard’s management.
Jese
Jese
The forward signed for Johor Darul Ta’zim last year after a nomadic few years flitting between Turkey (Ankaragucu), Italy (Sampdoria) and Brazil (Coritiba).
Juan Carlos Silva
Born in Brazil but raised in Spain, Jean Carlos joined Real Madrid’s youth ranks as a teenager. After failing to break through, he bounced around Spain, Turkey (Eyupsor), and England (Leeds United, where he briefly shone in the Championship).
Now 34, he’s playing for Pendikspor in the Turkish second tier (TFF First League), a far cry from the Bernabeu dreams of his youth.
Juan Mata
A La Fabrica graduate who never played for Real Madrid’s senior side, Mata went on to star for Valencia, Chelsea, and Manchester United. At 36, after winning a Turkish title with Galatasaray and spending a year in Japan with Vissel Kobe, he now turns out for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia’s A-League.
It’s an obscure destination for a player of his pedigree, offering a new adventure in a less-followed league.
Alejandro Pozo
Pozo developed at Real Madrid before joining Manchester City in 2012, though he never broke through there either. After returning to Spain (Almeria, Rayo Vallecano) and a stint in Cyprus with Karmiotissa, he’s now with Slask Wroclaw in Poland’s Ekstraklasa.
The Polish league remains a niche outpost, making it a fitting home for this forgotten talent still grinding away at 28.
Jose Callejon
A Real Madrid youth product who made his mark at Napoli, Callejon is still going strong at 38. After spells at Fiorentina and Granada, he joined Marbella FC in Spain’s Primera Federacion (third tier) in 2024.
While Spain isn’t obscure, the regional third division is a significant drop from his La Liga and Serie A days, keeping him active in a quieter footballing realm.
Oscar Rodriguez
Hailing from Talavera de la Reina, Oscar spent over a decade at Real Madrid, earning two senior Spain caps in 2020 but only one Copa del Rey appearance for the club.
After leaving for Sevilla in 2020, he’s now on loan at Almere City in the Dutch Eredivisie from Sevilla (via a stint at Celta Vigo).
The Eredivisie isn’t the most obscure, but Almere City, a smaller club, keeps him under the radar at 24.
