The national grid has been experiencing frequent collapses, with over 200 incidents in the past decade. In 2022, the grid collapsed eight times, and in 2023, it happened nine times. This year alone has seen 10 collapses, with the latest one being the most recent . The frequency of these collapses raises concerns about the reliability and sustainability of Nigeria's power sector.

Experts point to several factors contributing to these collapses, including:

- Aging Infrastructure: Nigeria's power grid is old and fragile, with many parts operating beyond their intended lifespan .

- Poor Maintenance: Regular maintenance schedules are often delayed or ignored, leading to equipment failures.

- Vandalism and Sabotage: Power infrastructure, such as transformers and transmission lines, are sometimes targeted by vandals or saboteurs.

- Insufficient Power Generation: Nigeria's power generation capacity is insufficient to meet the demand of its growing population and economy .

The frequent grid collapses have significant economic consequences, including:

- Lost Productivity: Manufacturing plants shut down, and businesses lose revenue during blackouts.

- Increased Costs: Small businesses and households rely on expensive generators, increasing their costs.

- Deterring Investors: The unstable power supply discourages foreign investors from entering the market .

The World Bank has approved a $750 million credit to support Nigeria's Power Sector Recovery Operation (PSRO) . The PSRO aims to improve the reliability of electricity supply, achieve financial and fiscal sustainability, and enhance accountability in the power sector.
