Enough Is Enough, INEC Must Obey the Law - PDP

The Edo State governorship election controversy has taken a disturbing turn with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) refusing to comply with a court order. The commission's defiance has sparked outrage, raising concerns about its impartiality and commitment to democracy.

On September 21, 2024, Edo State held its governorship election. The People's Democratic Party (PDP), dissatisfied with the outcome, petitioned the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. In a landmark ruling, the tribunal ordered INEC to grant PDP lawyers and forensic experts access to electoral documents, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine.

Despite the clear directive, INEC has stalled the process, citing the need for an "order from above." This move has raised eyebrows, sparking concerns about the commission's commitment to transparency and fairness. The PDP has accused INEC of deliberately obstructing justice and undermining democracy.

In a disturbing escalation, police officers and All Progressives Congress (APC) members allegedly intimidated and prevented PDP lawyers and forensic experts from accessing the INEC office in Benin City. This blatant attack on democracy has drawn widespread condemnation.

As news of INEC's non-compliance spread, Nigerians took to social media, demanding transparency and accountability. The hashtag #BVASInspectionNow trended, with many calling for INEC to obey the tribunal's mandate.

The PDP has vowed to continue its legal battle, determined to reclaim what it believes is its rightful victory. "We will not be deterred by INEC's antics," said a party spokesperson. "The people of Edo State deserve justice, and we will fight tirelessly to ensure their voices are heard."

INEC's refusal to comply with the tribunal's order has far-reaching implications for Nigeria's democratic process. It undermines the credibility of elections, erodes trust in institutions, and threatens the very foundation of democracy.
