Abuja Demolitions Spark Outrage as Wike Cracks Down on Protesters

A storm of outrage has swept through Nigerian social media platforms following reports that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has been interrogating Abuja residents who attempted to stop FCTA officials from demolishing their homes. The move has sparked widespread condemnation, with many questioning the minister's actions and priorities.

The FCTA has been carrying out demolitions in various parts of Abuja, citing reasons such as illegal structures, environmental degradation, and non-compliance with urban planning regulations. However, residents affected by the demolitions claim they were not given adequate notice or compensation, leading to protests and resistance.

Wike's decision to interrogate residents who protested the demolitions has been met with fierce criticism. Many argue that the minister's actions are heavy-handed and violate the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.

"This is unacceptable," said Abuja resident, Emmanuel Okoro. "We're not troublemakers; we just want to protect our homes and livelihoods."

"The FCTA should engage with residents, not intimidate them," said community leader, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed. "We need inclusive governance, not authoritarianism."

Ironically, Wike recently announced plans to build 10,000 houses for Abuja's low-income earners in 2025. Critics argue that this initiative rings hollow in light of the ongoing demolitions.

"How can you claim to provide housing for the poor while destroying existing homes?" asked social activist, Iniobong Usen. "This is contradictory and unjust."

As the controversy escalates, calls are growing for intervention from higher authorities, including the Presidency and the National Assembly.

"We urge the Federal Government to investigate these demolitions and ensure residents' rights are protected," said human rights lawyer, Barrister Chidi Odinkalu.
