Video: Parents Protest and Threaten Boycott over Increase in Boarding Fees of Government Secondary Schools in Lagos

 Following increase of boarding fees for students across government owned secondary schools in Lagos from 35,000 naira to 100,000 naira, parents have demanded a reversal in the hike while threatening to keep their children and wards at home until a reviewal of the unexpected 185% boarding fee increase occurs. The parents who accused the Lagos State Government and Ministry of Education of insensitivity and corruption, expressed their grievances via chairman of the Parents’ Forum of Lagos Model Colleges, Surv. Dapo Dawodu, during an emergency meeting which held on Saturday 14 September, 2024. Some of these parents further took to the premises select model school to protest the shocking hike in boarding fees.

The Lagos State Government announced the review of the boarding fees across public schools in the state in a letter addressed to all boarding school principals signed by the Director, Basic Education Services, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Olufemi Asaolu. The letter informing the principals of this increase, further stressed that the resumption date for all students remains Sunday 15 September 2024, while emphasizing that no additional fee of any form should be collected by the schools.
