School Fees Increase: UI Students Seek Social Media Crowdfunding

 Following the recent increase of the tuition fees of The University of Ibadan by more than a 100%, many undergraduate students of the university have taken to social media to solicit public funds in order to meet up with the institution's recently announced deadline on tuition and registration. The students from various departments in the university -ranging from pharmacy to philosophy to education-put up posters urging the public to help them finance their education in order to graduate from university. The fee increase for the University of Ibadan's 2023/2024 academic session, reportedly ranges between N230,000 and N412,000 per student

Reacting to the crowdfunding pleas from the undergraduates, social media users have expressed shocked at the declining state of Nigeria's economy and the cost of acquiring an education. Netizens further observed that prior to the current administration and economic hardship, obtaining placements in federal higher institutions was a very competitive feat as many parents found the fees of federal universities affordable as opposed to state and privately owned universities and higher colleges of learning. Netizens have also taken to calling out the Vice-chancellor and other administrators of The University of Ibadan over the unusual crowdfunding exercise being done by the university's students.
