The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress candidate, Monday Okpebholo, winner of the 21st September 2024 governorship election conducted in Edo state. According to the results collated by the electoral commission, Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who received 247,274 votes and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who emerged third in the race with 22,763 votes. In total, Monday Okpebholo emerged victorious in 10 of the 18 local government areas in Edo state, thus securing victory for The APC after the party lost power in the year 2020 following incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki's defection to The PDP.

Prior to contesting in the 2024 governorship election of Edo state, 54 year old Monday Okpebholo, has served as the senator representing Edo Central senatorial district since 2023. The now governor-elect contested for the Senate Seat in Edo Central senatorial district, under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was elected on 25 February 2023. On 13 June 2023, he was inaugurated into the 10th National Assembly of Nigeria, as the senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Edo Central senatorial district. In February 2024, Monday Okpebholo won the Edo State APC gubernatorial primary election.
