A Catalonian woman verified as the oldest living person in the world by The Guinness World Records, has died. 117 year old Maria Branyas Morera, passed away in her sleep on 19 August 2024. Following Maria Branyas Morera's death, 116 year old Tomiko Itooka from Japan, has become the oldest living person in the world as well as the oldest person in Japan.

Maria Branyas Morera was born in 1907 in San Francisco but moved to Catalonia, an autonomous community in Spain, with her family, later calling Barcelona home. The Guinness World Records gave the title of "oldest woman living" to Branyas Morera when Lucile Randon, a nun known as Sister André, died in 2023 at the age of 118. Branyas became a supercentenarian in 2017, which is achieved by about one in a thousand centenarians.In March 2020, Branyas became the then-oldest person to recover from COVID-19 and in an interview with The Observer, she called for better treatment of the elderly.
