Following widely circulated photos of protesters who participated in The #EndBadGovernance demonstration wielding Russian flags and the declaration of the act as treason by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Murtala, the Russian embassy has released a statement responding to the images. In the statement dated 5th August, the Russian embassy emphatically disassociated Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, from the activities of the flag waving protesters who also called for Mr Putin's intervention in Nigeria's economic situation.
The Russian embassy further emphasized that the Russian government does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. Pledging respect for Nigeria's democracy, the statement also declared that the intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals which do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in issues involving Nigeria and its government policies.
