Students of The University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state, on 3rd July 2024, assembled at the Benin-Lagos expressway and barricaded the university's main gate in protest of a three week long absence of power supply. The students who held up placards depicting the poor state of the university's power supply accompanied their protests with chants of "give us light" and vowed to continue their protests(which have disrupted vehicular movement) until the university management offers them a listening ear.

Emphasizing the spiral effects of the lack of electricity, the protesting students stated that they're neither able to read at night nor obtain water to clean up their environment/take care of their personal hygiene. The protesting students lamented that the university's management had failed to cooperate with them because the stipulated 3 hours within which the campus generator ought to be turned on, were rarely adhered to. They implored the state or federal government to intervene in the situation as the university claims that it cannot afford to clears it's current electricity debt of 300 million naira, has mandated by BEDC, the electricity distribution company.
