The palace of The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was on the morning of Saturday 13 July, engulfed in a fire outbreak that destroyed the Emir's throne and a section of the palace where the traditional ruler sits every morning for court at Kofar Kudu. Chief of Staff to the Emir, Munir Sanusi Bayero, Dan Buram Kano, confirmed the fire outbreak in a press statement where he referred to the damage as "minimal" and affirmed that there were no casualties. The Chief of Staff further revealed in the public notice that an investigation into the fire incident and a prevention of its recurrence is ongoing.

Providing details of the fire outbreak, am anonymous palace insider stated to the press: "It was the palace at Kofar Kudu. You know the palace has an entrance from inside while the main entrance is from the front (outside). The key was forced open, and what was suspected was that they broke in, set the fire and locked the door. The throne, air conditioners and other valuables in the palace have been destroyed."
