Following a one day strike action which held on 3rd June 2024 and a series of meetings between stakeholders of The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and The Federal Government over an increase in minimum wage in the country, both parties have reached mutual agreement with The FG announcing its intention to pay the sum of 70,000 naira as the new minimum wage in Nigeria. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement at the presidential villa today, Thursday 18 July 2024.

Prior to the agreement reached by The Federal Government and The Congress on the new minimum wage of 70,000 naira, the Labour Congress(led by their president, Comrade Joe Ajaero) had strongly advocated the sum of 480,000 naira which was later reduced to 250,000 naira. In addition to signing the new minimum wage, the president assured that the wage laws in the country will be reviewed every three years henceforth. President Tinubu also pledged to support the private sector and subnational entities in meeting the new minimum wage requirements.
