President of Kenya, William Ruto, has ordered the withdrawal of the recent pay rise given lawmakers and ministers in the country. The order of withdrawal is in response to public outrage and criticism by Kenyan protesters who have fervently sought the resignation of the president. Emphasizing that the lawmakers and ministers live within their means, president Ruto through the spokesperson for the Kenya Stated House, Hussein Mohammed, stated that the rescindment of the intended pay increase took effect from the first day of July.

The pay rise for Mr Ruto’s cabinet members and lawmakers coincided with nationwide protests that have resulted in over 39 deaths and hundreds of injuries in various parts of Kenya. Prior to the order of rescindment issued by the president, each cabinet secretary who earned Ksh. 957,000 was supposed earn an increased Ksh. 990,000 plus allowances, and each of the 51 principal secretaries who earned Ksh. 792,519 were to earn Ksh. 819,844.
