A Ghanaian Chef identified as Ebenezer Smith, popularly referred to as Millennium Chef Smith, was on Wednesday 3rd July, 2024, arrested and detained at the La police station for forging a Guinness World Records recognition certificate in order to host a marathon cooking event, which received widespread sponsorship. On Tuesday 2nd July, the chef had presented a certificate confirming himself as the new world record holder for the 820-hour 25-minute cook-a-thon, which started on February 1 and ended on March 6, 2024, to his fans at a press conference.

Confirming the invalidity of his certificate to BBC, the PR Executive for GWR, Alina Polianskaya, said, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title, and that is not our certificate. Alina also confirmed that the current original record for the longest cooking marathon (individual) is 119hr 57 min 16 sec and was achieved by Alan Fisher (Ireland) in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from 28 September to 3rd October 2023. Alan Fisher's predecessor was Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci who cooked for 93 hours to set her record.
