Russian authorities have confirmed the drowning of four medical students who went swimming in a river located in northwest Russia. According to the investigators, the students had been swimming in an area of the river were bathing is prohibited. The drowning incident occurred on Tuesday 4th June 2024 in the Volkhov River located in the city of Veliky Novgorod where the students had been pursuing their medical studies at the local university.

According to the regional investigative committee, two of the four students had been carried away by the current and the other two jumped in to save their colleagues, unfortunately all four of them went under water. The investigative committee further revealed that a fifth student named Nisha Sonawane was rescued from the river. Confirming the recovery of two of the four bodies, the Indian consulate revealed that the families of the drowned medical students had been contacted and efforts to take their bodies back home remain ongoing. All of the students were between the ages of 18 and 20 with their names listed as: Harshal Dersale, Jishan Pinjari, Jia Pinjari and Malik Mohammad Yakub.
