Police Re-Arrests Convicted Rapist Who Threatened Witnesses, Escaped During #EndSARS Protest

The Edo State Police Command has announced the re-arrest of Jacob Alonge, a 58-year-old prisoner who escaped from the Benin Correctional Centre during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.

Alonge, who was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for raping his own daughter, Gift Alonge, was rearrested in Ososo community, Akoko-Edo local government, after a tip-off from credible sources.

According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, Alonge is a dangerous human being who is not fit to live with human beings.

"He threatened that the case would have no end and true to his threat, his daughter and others who were coming to testify in court died mysteriously, but he was convicted," Adegboye said.

The police operatives stormed the community to arrest Alonge, but faced resistance from some unscrupulous elements. However, they overpowered the resistors and successfully re-arrested the convict.

In an interview, Alonge claimed he escaped during the #EndSARS protest and was arrested after returning to his village. "I escaped to my village. I was called that police are in my house and are looking for me, so I went to meet them and I was arrested," he said.

The Commissioner of Police appealed to members of the community not to shield criminals, as they may become victims tomorrow. "Criminals don't have permanent friends," he warned.

Alonge is currently in police custody and will be taken to where he belongs, according to the Commissioner.
