Ondo Court Sentences 17-Year-Old to 14 Years in Prison for Raping College Student

An Ondo State High Court has sentenced a 17-year-old boy, Jibola Fakologbon to 14 years in prison for assaulting and raping a student of Ero College of Education.

Fakologbon was arraigned in December 2021 on two counts of assault and rape, which violated Sections 60 and 358 of the Ondo State Criminal Code, 2016.

Justice Yemi Fasanmi delivered the judgment on May 22, 2024, stating that the evidence showed Fakologbon committed the act and found him guilty.

The judge said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and all evidence corroborated the victim's testimony.

The victim narrated that Fakologbon accosted her, demanded money, and assaulted her when she refused.

He then tore her underwear and had sexual intercourse with her, leaving her with injuries.

Justice Fasanmi expressed satisfaction that the victim's testimony was corroborated by medical reports and other evidence.

The judge noted that Fakologbon confessed to touching, physically assaulting, and tearing the victim's underwear, which is considered an abomination in Nigerian communities.

The court found Fakologbon guilty of both crimes and sentenced him to 14 years in prison, with the sentences running concurrently.
