Scores of worshippers have been feared dead after a mosque collapsed in the Papa Ajao area of Lagos State on the afternoon of Sunday 26 May, 2024. The Muslim faithfuls had reportedly been in the middle of observing their afternoon prayers when the mosque collapsed. Speaking on the unfortunate incident, a spokesperson of the Public Affairs Unit of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), revealed that many of the dead bodies in the collapsed mosque had been evacuated despite the fact that an unidentified number of people and bodies remained trapped under the ruins.

While the exact cause of the sudden collapse is yet to be ascertained, residents of the community have expressed disbelief at the rather abrupt tragedy which struck the worshippers. The collapse of this mosque comes just a few days after the reported collapse of many other buildings in various local government areas of Lagos state following the heavy rainfalls that occurred at different times and on different days throughout the previous week.
