The members of The House of Representatives, have passed for second reading, a bill seeking to increase the retirement age of police officers in Nigeria. The bill also seeks to increase the retirement age of police officers from 35 years to 40 years in active service. If the proposed Police Act Amendment Bill is passed into law, all police officers will now retire at the age of 65(as opposed to the previous 60) or be set for retirement after spending 40 years in the force.

The Police Act Amendment Bill was jointly sponsored by the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, and the Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs, Abubakar Yalleman. In a brief bill debate on Tuesday 21st May, Abubakar Yalleman in explaining the reason for the proposed bill, said the amendment was necessary “given the need to apply the experience of officers who have been trained and has served for a considerable of years.” The Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs further declared that the bill would “improve the morale performance and job satisfaction and to address the shortage of experienced police personnel and related matters.”
