Excessive Wealth Display:China Blocks Accounts of Social Media Influencers

 The Chinese Government has commenced the process of taking down the social media accounts of influencers who have violated the country's laws against flaunting a luxurious lifestyle on social media. In 2022, Chinese officials issued a “code of conduct” prohibiting livestream anchors from “displaying or hyping a large number of luxury goods, jewelry, cash and other assets.” China is experiencing an economic slowdown that has hit the middle class especially hard.

China' national internet Regulator, Cyberspace Administration, in explaining the purpose of the campaign against wealth flaunting social media influencers, revealed that as a result of the current unhappiness with the economic situation in the country, online content disconnected from that reality, creates a warped psychology which poses negative effects for development . The campaign to bring down the social media accounts promoting luxurious items and  also extends to a restriction on posting about a luxury lifestyle and activities.
