Atiku Vows to Keep Contesting for Presidency

 Former Vice-president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that he will keep contesting for the position of president of Nigeria for as long as he remains alive and his health permits. While speaking at a press interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja, the 77 year old former vice president revealed that his zeal to continually contest for the presidency was inspired by by the story of former American President, Abraham Lincoln, who contested many times before he could become the occupant of the White House. In Atiku Abubakar's words: "Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy."

Despite serving as vice president of Nigeria from 1999-2007 under the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar has unsuccessfully contested for the position of president of Nigeria a total of six times. Atiku Abubakar contested in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 respectively, he also ran as governor of Adamawa State in 1990, 1996, and in 1998, when he was finally elected before he became Obasanjo's running mate during the 1999 presidential election and his subsequent reelection in 2003.
