US Government Slams Nigeria Over Emefiele, Kanu's Arrests

The United States Government has criticized Nigeria's arbitrary arrests of Godwin Emefiele and Nnamdi Kanu, citing concerns about lengthy pre-trial detention, denied access to court, and a flawed judicial system.

A ‘2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria,’ published Tuesday on the U.S. Department of State’s website highlighted issues with corruption cases, including unlawful arrests and disregard for due process.

Emefiele was detained by the DSS without warrant, while Kanu, designated a terrorist leader, was arrested and charged with treason and terrorism.

Despite court orders for release, Kanu remains incarcerated due to federal government appeals.

The report also noted Nigeria's judicial system challenges, including shortages, corruption, and political influence, leading to delayed cases and lost files.

The US emphasized the need for fair and transparent legal processes to uphold human rights.
