A Nigerian Chess master, Tunde Onakoya, has broken the Guinness World Records for the longest chess marathon after completing 60 hours of playing chess, surpassing his original intent of 58 hours. Onakoya who played at The Times Square in New York City, broke the record previously held by Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes in 2018 and aimed at reaching a 58 hour target. The chess master's aim of breaking the record was to raise donations towards the education of underprivileged kids in Africa.

Tunde Onakoya is a Nigerian chess master, coach and founder of Chess in Slums Africa. He has organized a number of interventions for children across slums in Lagos state including Majidun (Ikorodu), Makoko and recently, Oshodi. The children are engaged in a two week session that seeks to unlock their potential through the game of chess while learning to read, write and acquire basic literacy skills.
