Public holidays, also referred to as national holidays, are designated days each year when normal work activities are suspended by law.


These occasions commemorate significant historical milestones, religious observances, or adhere to specific calendar systems.


While there's a common perception that some African nations are inundated with public holidays, none of them rank in the top 10 globally. Morocco is the highest-ranking African country, coming in 11th place.

At the top of the list, Cambodia leads with an impressive 28 public holidays annually. Sri Lanka closely follows with 25, while India and Kazakhstan observe 21 each.


Other countries with substantial public holiday counts include Colombia, the Philippines, and Trinidad and Tobago, each with 18. China and Hong Kong have 17.


In Nigeria, approximately 11 public holidays are observed annually, encompassing both religious and secular celebrations. These include New Year's Day, Independence Day, Christmas, and Eid al-Fitr, among others.
