FIRS Retracts Easter Message; Extends Apology to CAN and Christians

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has tendered an apology to The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), over what the Christian Association termed the inappropriateness of the Service's Easter Message. The FIRS, in an X (formerly Twitter) post on its official account, had shared a picture of a Point of Sale(POS) machine with the caption, “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.” The post garnered criticism of the Service from Christians and CAN who deemed it offensive.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser Media to the FIRS chairman, Dare Adekanbi, the Revenue Service clarified that the message had not been intended to disparage Jesus Christ or undermine the significance of Easter. The FIRS explained that the message had been meant to creatively engage taxpayers and emphasize the importance of fulfilling civic obligations, including tax payment. While tendering an apology to CAN and Christians across the country, The FIRS assured that the Service has no religion and has no intention of offending the sensibilities of adherents of various faiths in the country.
