First Lady of The Federation, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday 28th March, donated the sum of one billion naira towards the eradication of tuberculosis in the country. She made the donation following her investiture as the Global and National Stop TB champion by the Global Stop TB Partnership, in Abuja. Speaking at the investiture, Mrs Tinubu stated that she accepts the investiture as a call for action to end tuberculosis in the country by 2030. Nigeria is currently ranked sixth country with the highest burden of TB in the world and the first country in Africa with the highest number of TB cases.

Nigeria experienced an increased incidence of TB from 2000 to 2021. The number of TB incidences increased from 269,000 in 2000 to 467,000 in 2021. In between the years, there has been a steady increase in the number of incidences recorded in the country. Every year, around 245,000 Nigerians die from tuberculosis (TB) and about 590,000 new cases occur (of these, around 140,000 are also HIV-positive). TB accounts for more than 10% of all deaths in the country.
