Governor of Borno State, Umaru Mohammed Bago, has implored the federal government to censor the content being published on social media platforms in Nigeria as these platforms are being abused by users. The governor gave the suggestion on social media censorship on Thursday 8th February, during his decorative ceremony as Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council which took place at the Council Chamber of the Niger State Government House.

Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago emphasized that the call for a censorship on social media platforms is in a bid to control the spread of fake news and hate speeches. In the governor's words: "I call for the introduction of censorship on social media contents to checkmate the spread of fake news and hate speeches." In light of his call for social media censorship, governor Bago joins a list of politicians who have since the year 2020, urged the government to censor or outrightly ban the use of social media in the country.
