The House of Representatives Committee on Health has revealed that the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) located in Idi-Araba, Mushin, has closed five hospital wards with an approximate number of 150 bedspace as a result of staff shortage. Chairman of the committee, Dr. Amos Magaji, highlighted challenges faced by the hospital due to the absence of medical staff(especially nurses and doctors) despite the hospital’s daily influx of patients.

During a visit to the hospital, Dr Magaji expressed sadness at the alarming rate at which health workers leave the country, while emphasizing the need to deal with the problem as a national issue. Speaking to the press, The Chairman assured that steps were being taken by the government to halt the mass exodus of health care professionals out of the country. Dr Magaji also asserted that The committee aims to address problems from university enrollment to employment conditions for medical practitioners, as well as ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all Nigerians.
