He spoke to reporters after the visit.

In his words:

"I've been involved in a number of things in West Africa and in Africa. Infact tomorrow I'm going to Kenya on the 14th I will be in Liberia for their rerun elections. That is what we have been doing, so I'm like a roving ambassador to see how we can bring peace to the sub region to the continent and indeed our country.

"This appointment was like a week ago but we couldn't and today it now coincided with the judgement of the Supreme Court yesterday. So it was the opportunity for me to also congratulate Mr President.

"We talked a lot about the country and so you would soon see it. There are certain things we discussed, the country must move forward and elections are over, so we must move forward.

"Yes, that is what all Africans are saying, I have a programme, a foundation I want to call 'democracy dialogue' and Professor Lumumba spoke. They emphasised the need for Nigeria to take a lead in Africa.

"Yes, we have challenges economically now but we still have what it takes to lead and these are some of the issues I will continue to have conversations with Mr President including briefing him on all my foreign programs cos they are not personal issues.

"Traditionally, former presidents go outside the country for this continental regional programs, even some international, you come home and you tell the President, so that is the tradition. Most at times when you see me here, it's cos of things we must do to move Nigeria forward, to move ECOWAS forward, to move the African continent forward.

Asked on the current state of political tension in the country, Jonathan said:

"That's what exactly I have been saying, we need to bring everybody, all our political leaders, including all the former presidents together.

"We would not be fighting, even if we fight, you know this common saying that when two elephants fight, the grass suffers.

"If top leaders continue fighting, they will not suffer that much but the downtrodden suffer and we want to end all these tension and so we move forward as a nation", he said.
