The Abia State Government has denied rumours stating that Northerners resident in the state have been asked to permanently leave the state. The Northerners predominantly live and conduct their businesses at the Lokpanta Cattle Market, around the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway by Umunneochi. Describing the rumours as "false news", the Abia State Government referred to the Northerners as "the second and third generations of Igbos" living in Lokpanta.

Special Adviser to The Governor on Security, Navy Commander Macdonald Ubah (rtd), made dispelled this "rumour" while speaking to members of the press at the Government House on Monday 16th October, 2023. The Special Adviser however confirmed that the area the Northerners dwell has been discovered as a major hideout location for all kinds of individuals involved in different criminal activities, including kidnappings, organ harvesting, armed robbery and other violent crimes. Macdonald Ubah said ransom for kidnap victims around the Uturu-Umunneochi axis were paid in the market, a situation which prompted the government to, among other measures, carry out deliberate actions including demolition of brothels and shanties in the market.
