The acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the mandatory treatment of gunshot victims without police report. The Inspector General of Police stated that the new directive was in line with the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017. This information on the mandatory treatment of gunshot victims was contained in an internal memo signed by to Force Principal Staff Officer, Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday 25th October, 2023.

The memo was addressed to all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police and other highly ranked officers of the Nigeria Police Force. It further urged all police officers to ensure public awareness and compliance with the national law without further hesitation. The latest law enforcement directive on mandatory treatment of gunshot victims is in response to public concerns on low compliance with previously enacted laws on gunshot victims, due to poor awareness among health care workers and the general public.
