Rwanda's President Announces Plan to Run for Fourth Term in Office

President of Rwanda Paul Kagame who has been in office since the year 2000, has announced his intention to run for fourth term in the coming elections of 2024. This announcement marks the first time the incumbent president has clearly stated his intention to run for a fourth term in office. In 2015, president Kagame presided over constitutional amendments that would permit him to run for more terms in office and stay in power until 2034. Specifically, Rwandan legislators approved a standalone Article 172 in the draft constitution which will allow Kagame to rule the country as long as he wishes. Since ascending the presidency in 2000, Kagame has faced three presidential elections, in 2003, 2010 and 2017. On each occasion, he was reeelected in a landslide.
