Zoleka Mandela granddaughter of South Africa's anti-apartheid leader and former President, Nelson Mandela, to the surprise of many, left a list of people prevented from attending her funeral. Zoleka Mandela who passed away after a long battle with cancer on 25th September 2023 at the age of 43, included many of her relatives in her comprehensive of people barred from attending her funeral. The persona non grata list includes Zoleka's ex-husband and father of two of her kids, Thierry Bashala( who mourned her on Instagram after her death) as well as some relatives who abused her sexually. Zoleka's also indicated that she been very close to adding her father, sisters and stepmother to her long list of people barred from attending her funeral.

Zoleka Mandela was a writer, activist, and Nelson Mandela's granddaughter born to his daughter, Zindzi Mandela. She wrote of her addictions, her daughter's death, and her own battles with breast cancer. Zoleka was first diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2011. The disease returned in 2016 and she described the removed tumour and side effects of her chemotherapy treatment on her Instagram page. In August 2022, Zoleka revealed that her cancer had returned for the third time and she had been diagnosed with bone metastasis. She passed away on 25 September 2023, leaving behind the surviving 4 of her 6 children.
