Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has resigned his appointment paving way for President Tinubu's nominee, Yemi Cardoso to step in acting capacity.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Friday, September 22, 2023, nominated Olayemi Michael Cardoso pending his confirmation by the Senate.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in a statement said Cardoso's assumption is coming on the heels of the resignation of the immediate past governor of the bank, Godwin Emefiele,

According to the statement, the Deputy-Governors-Designate of the bank have also assumed duty, in acting capacities, due to the formal resignation of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.
‘’Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues subscribed to the relevant oaths of office at a brief ceremony held at the Bank’s Head Office in Abuja, on Friday, September 2023, and have since settled down to the task of administering monetary and financial sector policies of the FederalGovernment'', the statement reads.
Olayemi Michael Cardoso, an Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, the former Chairman Citi Nigeria, was a Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos when President Tinubu was Governor.
The new CBN chief brings over three decades of managerial experience on board.
Cardoso studied managerial and administrative studies at the Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom.
He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, United States of America.
