Residents of Calabar, Cross River State capital are now living in palpable fear over claims of disappearance of male private organs.

Some members of the city have alleged that a person's private organ could be harvested after a mere handshake or body contact with strangers.

The residents say the identity of those responsible for the disappearance of male genitals, for what purpose and what is the fate of those who claim their private organs have not been ascertained.

The Cross River State Government while reacting to the rumour in a statement signed by its Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang said such claims were not true.

The Cross River State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo in a statement said such claims were the handiwork of mischief makers and called on members of the public to go about their businesses without fear.

"I want to say it here that the noise that some persons' manhood has been disappearing in Calabar is not true. We have investigated the matter and found that there is nothing of such. We want to warn that people should stop spreading falsehood." - SP Irene Ugbo, CRS

"The Government of Cross River State wishes to inform members of the Public, especially residents of our dear State to disregard the purported news of loss of male genital organs in the Calabar Metropolis.

"This is indeed fake news being peddled from the imagination of the bearers and should be discountenanced in its entirety.

"Government wishes to further add that the Cross River State Police Command through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, had named the complainant of the fake news as Mr. Moses Edet Udo while the suspect is Mr. Atim Inyang Jackson.

"The Police Command said after a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that the Complainant’s Manhood was intact.

"To clearly ascertain the veracity of the claim, the Commissioner for information visited the Police Clinic, Akim where the Complainant was admitted to rest, and personally interacted with the victim to the indication that his genital organs were in their rightful positions.

"Against this backdrop, the Government implores all residents and visitors alike to desist from peddling false rumors which are capable of causing disaffection amongst the citizenry.

"The Government of Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu in her proactive nature has directed all segments of Security Agencies to deal decisively with rumor mongers while those caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

"In the meantime, the Government hereby enjoins all residents and visitors to go about their normal businesses without any fear of molestation.

"As the Tourism Hub of the Country, the Governor Bassey Edet Otu-led administration further restates her commitment to protecting the lives and property of all citizens across the State. All concerned are to note and be guided accordingly please", the statement read.

Despite the police and the State Government assurance, the residents were still not ready to take them by their words as there was uproar in one part of the town or the other over disappearance of a male private organ.

It was gathered that over fifteen cases of missing male organs have taken place in virtually all parts of the town with some organs being restored to the victims by the perpetrators while some were said not to have been restored.

According to a spare parts dealer, Chibuike who spoke to Saturday Vanguard , “an organ was said to be sold for six hundred thousand naira last week but owing to market forces and high demand, the price has gone up to one million per organ”.

According to him, “the organs are used for ritual purposes to make money and anyone whose genital is stolen would die a few days after. More people will fall victim if something drastic is not done by the authorities to stop the ugly state of events in the city.

“Men now put bitter kola and alligator pepper in their pockets or hold their private organs tightly while walking on the street or inside commercial vehicles. The price of bitter kola has also gone up because of the high demand.”

Male organ disappearance were said to have occurred at Atimbo, Nyahasang, Moore Road, Satellite Town, Ekpo Abasi, 8 Miles, Watt Market, Atakpa/ Mayne Avenue and some other places in the city.
