Mozambican pastor named Francisco Barajas has died in an attempt to fast for 40 days and nights, following the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Francisco Barajas was the pastor and founder of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church in the central province of Manica. He died while being treated at a hospital in Beira where he admitted in critical condition. After 25 days of fasting, he had lost a lot of weight to the point where he could not stand, bathe or do anything else. Francisco Barajas had abstained from food as well as water or other forms of liquid.

The pastor, who also worked as a French teacher in a school, was said to have developed "severe anemia", had internal organ damage, and was unable to digest food. Medics reportedly attempted to rehydrate and nourish Barajah with liquid foods, but to no avail. Francisco Barajas passed away at a hospital in the city of Beira on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, 25 days after he commenced his 40 day fasting session.
