On Monday 6th February 2023 nearly 4,800 people have been confirmed dead after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Turkey and northern Syria. Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management agency said the earthquake killed people across seven Turkish provinces. At around 12.10 GMT, Turkey's disaster agency updated the death toll, saying the earthquake had killed 2,248 (rising from an earlier figure given by Turkey's president Recep Erdogan), and that 2,824 buildings had been destroyed.
The death toll is reportedly expected to rise as rescue workers search mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area. Many international aid organisations have set up appeals to provide emergency assistance to Turkey and Syria after the devastating quakes yesterday which have claimed nearly 5,000 lives and levelled buildings across the region. This quake is considered one of the strongest to hit the region in the last 100 years.
